Junior Sunday School Report 2023

Colossians 2:6-7, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

Our objectives (based on Col 2:6-7) is to lead the children:

1.               to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (Receive)

2.               to obey God and be a good testimony (Walk)

3.               to a vibrant spiritual life (Rooted & Built up)

4.               to a clear understanding of the basic Christian doctrines and teachings in the Word of God (Stablished and abounding)

Looking back on 2023, we are filled with thanksgiving unto God. It was only by God’s grace and mercy that we could continue to minister to the children, the parents and the teachers in Truth B-P Church. Praise God for how He enabled the Junior Sunday School (JSS) committee to serve Him in 2023.  This committee consisted of Bro Eric (Young Teens superintendent), Sis Alice (Junior superintendent), Sis Jyh Cheau (Pre-school superintendent), and myself (Geneal & Primary superintendent). Thank God also for Rev Dennis and Pr David who has been sitting in to advise and support this important ministry to the children.

Our church and JSS theme for 2023 remained the same as last year’s, namely “Saved by Faith, Live by Faith” (Galatians 3:11). To help the children better understand the Doctrine of Salvation, the children had three Open Sunday messages by  Rev Dennis Kwok on  “Christ made us free” (March 12), “Free not to sin but be crucified in the flesh” (May 14) and “Free to serve one another by love” (November 5).

The first major JSS event of 2023 was the YT cum Jr retreat (15 to 16 March) during the March school holidays. What was so significant about this retreat was that it was the first stay in 2-day-1-night retreat since Covid-19. The theme was “Ask for the old paths…and walk therein” taken from Jeremiah 6:16: “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” Pr David was the speaker of the four main messages. Thank God that we could have this retreat to exhort the youths to walk the old paths and for their good feedback at the end of the retreat. May the Lord continue to move the youths in our church to attend this year’s retreat and also to provide sufficient teachers/helpers to help out.

Another major JSS event was the Teachers’ retreat cum training on 29 June. During the first training session, Pr David spoke on “The Qualifications of a Teacher.” A second training was held on 13 November. Pr David touched on “The Theology of Teaching.” These two teachers’ training sessions were a part of a training program which will be taught over the next few years. In summary, the training program can be broken down into three main parts, namely “the teacher”, “the teaching” and “the taught.” God willing, our teachers will be better equipped to teach God’s Word to the children by the twice-a-year training session.

Other major events in the JSS calendar in 2023 included Combined Department Easter program (9 April), Combined Department Reformation program (29 October), Vacation Bible School (20 to 22 November), Combined Department Christmas program (24 December) and Promotion Sunday (31 December). Thank God for seeing the JSS through 2023. May God continue to bless this ministry and help the children to know Him and to make Him known.

Junior Sunday School Report 2021

Colossians 2:6-7: “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

Our objectives (based on Colossians 2:6-7) are to lead the children:

1. to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (Receive)
2. to obey God and be a good testimony (Walk)
3. to a vibrant spiritual life (Rooted & Built up)
4. to a clear understanding of the basic Christian doctrines and teachings in the Word of God (Stablished and abounding)

In 2021, the Junior Sunday School (JSS) was still faced with much uncertainties and many changes because of the pandemic. Thank God for His grace and mercies that helped us overcome these challenges. After using Zoom for about a year in 2020, most of the JSS teachers, parents and even the children were very well versed in using Zoom by 2021. Zoom is a very useful tool, but having JSS lessons over Zoom is always a last resort. Thank God that for the most part of 2021, we could have physical JSS classes in church. However, in order to slow down the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, the government did not allow in-person religious classes for a few weeks in May, July, August and October. Thus, JSS lessons had to be via Zoom during that period. Otherwise, we provided Zoom for children only on a case-by case basis (i.e. for children who were unwell and could not come to church or whose parents did not allow them to come to church, etc).

As the church continued with “Walking Worthy of Our Calling” as the theme in 2021, the JSS followed suit. In line with this theme, Rev Dennis Kwok spoke to the children on “Walk not as other Gentiles walk” (3 Jan), “Walk in love” (16 May) and “Walk as Wise” (7 November) over 3 Open Sundays. Ng Boon Choo and Liz Yeo assisted him by leading the children in message related activities.

Due to the pandemic, we could not have a 2-day-1-night Young Teens-cum-Junior Retreat in church. But thank God that we could still have a 2-and-a-half-day Retreat from 18 to 19 March. The theme was “Drawing Closer to God.” Rev Zhu Jian Wei was our speaker. Thank God for a blessed Retreat with 13 fulltime and 2 part-time attendees, and 3 helpers. May the Lord help everyone to apply the lessons learnt.

We also thank and praise God for leading us through the other major events in our JSS calendar in 2021. These included the General Meetings (7 March and 7 November, prerecorded messages), Combined Department Easter Programme (4 April), Combined Department Reformation Programme (31 October), Vacation Bible School (23 to 24 November, via Zoom), Combined Department Christmas Programme (19 December) and Promotion Sunday (26 December). Without God, we can do nothing. As the pandemic rages on, please continue to pray for the ministry of the JSS. May the LORD continue to keep us faithful.

Junior Sunday School Report 2012

The Junior Sunday School plays a crucial part in the Christian Education to children in Truth B-P Church. It ministers to children aged fourteen and below.

The objectives of the Junior Sunday School are based on Colossians 2:6-7, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

Our objectives are to lead the children to:
1.    the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (Receive)
2.    obey God and be a good testimony (Walk),
3.    a vibrant spiritual life (Rooted and Built up),
4.    a clear understanding of the basic Christian doctrines and teachings in the Word of God (Stablished and Abounding).

There were about 30 children in the Junior Sunday School in the year 2012. The children were grouped according to their ages into four departments (see table below). There were between four to eight children in each department.

Each department has its own curriculum to meet the spiritual needs of its students. Pre-school and Primary departments focused mainly on Bible narratives. The children learn not only about biblical characters and events in the Old and New Testaments, but were also taught foundational truths drawn from these Bible lessons and how they may apply them in their lives. Both departments used materials from the Regular Baptist Press.

Children in the Junior Department had a programme of systematic study of the Bible doctrines according to the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Their focus was to help the children understand the answers to the Catechism questions and the supporting doctrines.

Students in the Young Teens department were further grounded in their faith by a two-year programme that included a study of the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith and a survey of the whole Bible. The Young Teens teacher would get the students to memorize scripture verses and to engage the students in a two-way discussion on practical applications. Both the Junior and Young Teens departments used materials which were developed in-house.

Besides regular Sunday school lessons, the children also have combined department programmes, which, in 2012, included the following activities:
·        --  Quarterly birthday celebrations
·         -- Easter Quiz
·         -- Teachers’ Day celebration
·         -- Missions Fortnight
·         -- Promotion Sunday

Each department, with the exception of Pre-school, had an Open Sunday usually on the fifth Sunday of the month. This gave our Pastor, Rev Dennis Kwok, the opportunity to minister God’s Word to the children.

Some departments also organized special programmes. The Pre-school department had an outing at Yew Mei Green on 10 March, while the Junior and Young Teens departments had their combined outing to East Coast Park on 29 December.

The Junior Sunday School teachers gathered in church on 2 June for a teachers’ training session on the topic “The Makings for a Good Sunday School Lesson.” Eileen taught the Pre-school and Primary teachers while Xiao Wei taught the Junior and Young Teens teachers. Thank God that many participants found the session practical and felt that it was helpful for their lesson preparation.

Thank God for the department superintendents and assistant superintendents’ service in 2012. As part of the Junior Sunday School committee, they met quarterly to discuss and decide on matters concerning the Junior Sunday School. We are also thankful to God for the dedicated service of all the teachers and helpers. To show their appreciation, the Sunday School children presented a song item during the Worship Service on 2 September. Each teacher and helper also received a card made by the children. This was a part of our Teachers’ Day celebration which ended with a Teacher’s Day high-tea buffet.

Please pray that the Lord will give us wisdom and keep us faithful as we continue to serve Him in the training of these young children in the Word of God and in His ways. May these children be well trained in the way that they should go so that when they became old, they will not depart from it (Prov 22:6).

Junior Sunday School Report 2009

Colossians 2:6 -7, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

The objectives of our Junior Sunday school are to lead the children:
1. to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (Receive)
2. to obey God and be a good testimony (Walk)
3. to a vibrant spiritual life (Rooted & Built up)
4. to a clear understanding of the basic Christian doctrines and teachings in the Word of God (Stablished and abounding)

Thank God for His many blessings and His continual leading of the Junior Sunday School through 2009. Thank God especially for each of the department superintendents and assistant superintendents who co-laboured with me namely Eric (Young Teens), Alice & Ben (Junior), Eileen & I (Primary), Tammy & Mary (Pre-school).

Just like the year before, we continued to have ‘Open Sunday’ on every 5th Sunday of the month and combined department programs on Easter and Christmas.

Thank God for the opportunities for the Junior Sunday School children show their appreciation to their parents. We had children from the Pre-school & Primary Depts presenting a song to all the mothers on Mother’s day (10 May) while those from the Junior & Young Teens Depts recited a poem for all the fathers on Father’s day (21 Jun).

On 30 Aug, it was the church’s turn to show appreciation to the teachers & helpers serving in our Church’s teaching ministry. It was a blessed day where teachers and helpers gathered for a time of sharing and prayer which was followed by a warm fellowship over a Hi-Tea buffet.

In order to introduce parents/church members to the Junior Sunday school and to involve parents/church members as supporters the Junior Sunday school, we organized a ‘Junior Sunday School day’ on 21 June for the very first time. Thank God that on the same day, the Children Ministry’s blog (www.truthkids.blogspot.com) was also launched. Through this new platform, we hope that we can better engage the children and support the teachers and the parents as they teach the children. With the same underlying desire of supporting the parents and teachers, we organized a forum on the theme of “Shepherding a Child’s heart” for them during the June family Bible camp. Thank God for many valuable lessons learnt through the message and the Q & A session.

One of the last major events of the year was our Church’s bi-annual Missions month in October. As the adults have their program, we also lined up a series of missions related programs for the children every Sunday in October. Thank God for the opportunities to exposure the children to Missions and Evangelism. May they learn to be missions minded from even from such a tender young age.

Thank God for all that He has enabled us to accomplished but there are still a lot more that could have been done. Please pray that God will give us more fervor and zeal to serve Him in 2010.

Junior Dept Report 2009

By Benjamin Yeo

Thank God for another year of service!

In 2009, the Junior Department continued studying the Westminster Shorter Catechism. The department comprised of 7 teachers and 7 students. In pairs, teachers were rotated to teach each lesson. The Sunday school teachers continued to plan each lesson using, “Teaching Minds, Training Hearts” by Starr Meade, as a guide. As most of the class consisted of students from Christian homes, we decided to focus on the application of God’s Word in their lives. The teachers agreed that most of the children have head knowledge but were lacking in the application of that knowledge in their lives. Therefore more time was given to the study and application of each question.

The prayer requests of the children were complied weekly and distributed to help the children pray for one another. An outing to East Coast Park was organized during the school holidays to help the teachers and children get to know one another better. The parents of the children were also invited.

As we continue to teach the children God’s Word, we pray that they will continue to remember the lessons they have learnt and apply them in their lives. May God also help the teachers to faithfully prepare and teach their lessons, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. Amen.

Pre-school Dept Report 2009

Thank the Lord for the year 2009 and how He had faithfully and wonderfully seen us through as we serve the Him in this department. He had faithfully provided teachers, assistant teachers, song leaders as well as musicians to serve Him in this area and they try their best to cater the program according to the children’s needs and level. Though it can be challenging at times but nonetheless, the Lord has been good to see us through. Through serving, it is seen that much joy and fulfillment as well as precious lessons has been gained.

Our objectives for the year 2009 were to enable the children to know Christ personally in their lives as well as to show them the importance of the Word of God. As such, we have continued with our Verse Memorization program on each Lord’s Day. It is with much joy to see the children learning the verses conscientiously and reciting it each week. Much thanks is given to the parents who have been greatly involved in this program as well. It is also with much prayer and hope that all these which have been learnt would not just be head-knowledge in the children, but that it may be lived out in their lives, for it is encouraged that these children may not just be hearers, but doers of His Word. We pray that the children would continue to desire the learning of God’s Word and that they would grow to be more like Him!

Young Teens Dept Report 2009

Thank God for all His blessing in 2009.

Continue with the objectives of our Junior Sunday School based on Colossians 2:6-7, the Young Teens teachers are mindful of the responsibility that God has entrusted us to impart not only knowledge but more importantly to build up the spiritual life of our students.

We continue to pray to God for wisdom to minister to the needs of the students. Also pray for the students that they will pay attention in class and apply what they have learnt so that they may grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Primary Dept Report 2009

Our Primary department’s objectives:
1. To foster a spirit of worshipping God in the children
2. To help the children to live out their Christian life
3. To foster a more personal & closer relationship with the children & their family

Thank God for the 8 children and 9 teachers in our dept in 2009. Thru the weekly Sunday School lessons and the many special events within the Junior Sunday School, both children and teachers had opportunities to learn, to grow and to serve.

Our department was in charged of putting together the Combined Dept Easter program on April 12. We put up a puppet show depicting the events surrounding the resurrection of Christ. It was not easy getting everything ready but children and teachers who were involved enjoyed putting up this puppet show from start to end. Judging from the very captivated audience, they enjoyed it too.

Gradually during the year, our teachers have been moving away from doing worksheets during every Sunday School lesson. The purpose of this change is to give the teachers freedom to choose how they want to review their lessons. Instead of worksheets, teachers can now choose to prepare review questions, games or art & craft or whatever appropriate ways they feel that can reinforce their lesson and make it more interesting.

Thank God for helping us to improve the children’s bible reading program for too. Now the children, not just read the selected verse daily but that at the end of each week of reading, they would do a fun activity to test their understanding of what they read. Since we introduced this, the children seem more motivate to read the Bible. In the end, we hope that the children will not only make it their habit to read the Bible daily but to grow to enjoy learning directly from God’s Word. May the Lord help us.

Young Teens Dept Report 2008

Thank God for His guidance through the year 2008. The YT department has an average of 4 pupils and 4 teachers.

Our aim is to help the students to grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ based on the Junior Sunday School theme taken from Col 2:6-7: "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving."

We have a 2 years program which consists of 12 series (with 7-8 lessons in each series). The teacher helps the students to apply the lessons by getting the students to memorize scripture, understand the lessons and the teachers will try their best to make the lesson practical and useful. It is the desire of the YT teachers that our pupils trust and obey the Lord with all their heart.

I am happy the students did well in their year end quiz and each get a "KJV Study Bible" so that they can equip themselves with the Word of God.

Junior Dept Report 2008

Praise the Lord for blessing the Junior Department in 2008!

The Junior Department has a team of 5 teachers and 7 regular pupils. In June, we have embarked on the study of the Westminster Shorter Catechism (WSC), after having lessons based on the Junior RPG for the past 2 ½ years. We hope to be more systematic and develop a 3-curriculum based on the WSC. Each week, a teacher will bring pupils through a question in the Shorter Catechism. The series has been edifying to both teachers and pupils. Though many questions are not so simple, it is indeed beneficial to learn doctrines and its applications in a systematic manner.

The pupils are usually spontaneous and open about the lessons learnt each week. The department also started a weekly prayer list for the pupils to share their praise and prayer items. Through this, the teachers and pupils got to know each other better.

We continue to pray that God will use the teachers and grant us wisdom as we do our best to impart God’s word to the pupils so that they may ‘grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen (2 Peter 3:18)

Primary Dept Report 2008

Thank God for seeing us through 2008.

Our Primary department’s objectives which were set last year remains. They are namely:
1. To foster a spirit of worshipping God in the children
2. To help the children to live out their Christian life
3. To foster a more personal and closer relationship with the children and their family

We have continued to have a regular attendance of 7 children and 8 teachers which was the same as last year. As there were not many children, we focus more on how to better minister to the children and their family more personally. One means was through almost quarterly letters which was sent to the parents to update them about the latest news of the department and the Junior Sunday school. Visitation is another channel which we hope to be more actively doing in 2009.

To better achieve our objectives, we built on what we did the previous year to improve it. Our singspiration improved since two young pianists (Grace Chang and Joanne Loo) joined to provide us will some piano accompaniment. We also continued on with the verse memorization and daily bible reading program. To make it more interesting, rewards in the form of stickers was included. At the end of each series, the child who is most faithful in their memory verses and their bible reading would be further reward with a small gift. At the end of each lesson, the teachers set aside a short prayer time to pray with the children and pray for the children so as to encourage them to pray and model for them how to pray.

Lastly, thank God for the opportunity for our department’s children to present a song item for Fathers’ day in June. All glory to God.

Pre-School Dept Report 2008

All praise and thanks to God for another fruitful year for the pre-school department in 2008. We thank God also for all cheerful teachers, assistant teachers, song leaders and musicians who faithfully served the Lord week after week.

The objective for 2008 is to encourage the children to memorized God’s word at a young age. Therefore, we introduced the verse memorization project for the department to encourage children to memorize God’s word. Children were given sketch book and Bible verses for each week. This project required the co-operation from parent s to teach their children to memorize the Bible verses on a weekly basis. It was such a joy to see how enthusiastic the children reacted towards this project. All glory to God!

Sunday School Report 2008

The year 2008 has been a fruitful year for the Junior Sunday School. The superintendent of each department reminded the same as 2007 which include Eric (Young Teens Dept), Dns Alice (Junior Dept), Mary (Pre-school Dept) and me (Primary Dept). Thank God for the addition of two assistant superintendents into our team namely Tammy (Pre-school Dept) and Ben (Junior Dept).

There are many significant milestones this year. One of the most significant one was the laying down of our Junior Sunday School Objectives.

These objectives are based on Colossians 2:6 -7, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

With the aim to encourage children to be more involved in worship, each department presented a song item on different special occasions like Mother’s day, Father’s day and Reformation Sunday. But for teachers’ day, we especially had the Junior Sunday School teachers themselves to present the song “A Servant’s Heart” which is like our pledge to God.

Teachers are the ones who directly ministers to the children. In order to encourage and to better equip them for the teaching ministry, we started a bi-monthly teachers’ newsletter called “The Teachers of Truth.” It is being emailed to all who are involved in the Junior Sunday school at the start of every even month.

There was no teachers’ retreat this year but we had 2 Teachers and Helpers’ meeting which was held on 30 March and 31 Aug respectively. Thank God for the good attendance although it is the first time we had such meeting. During the first meeting we took the opportunities to communicate our Junior Sunday School objectives to all our teachers. Some time as lay aside for teachers to share their testimonies to encourage others. At the end of the one hour session, we closed by praying for the Junior Sunday School within our different depts. More time was given to sharings and prayers during the second meeting. Since this meeting coincided with our teachers’ day celebration, the whole event ended with warm fellowship around a teachers’ day buffet.

To further support the teachers and also the parents of our Sunday School children, we organize special programs for them during the June family camp. The topic for the teachers’ training session was “How to make your Bible lessons come alive?” Rev Koshy was our speaker. He also spoke on “Parenting in the Pews: Guiding your Children into the Joy of Worship” during a parenting seminar in the same camp. Thank God for many precious truths learnt during these two sessions. May we all strive to be better teachers and better parents for the Lord.

Our last big event of the year was the 2nd Vacation Bible School. During those three days, from 18th to 20nd Nov, the children learnt about the “Handiwork of God”. Thank God for providing speakers even Mrs Quek and Mrs Ann Lim, over 40 helpers and also about 130 children. The three hour program in includes a message, a time for games, art and craft activities and also a snack time. Thank God for the many opportunities to share the gospel during the three days and quite a few children was saved as a result.

Thank God for all His blessings in 2008. Please pray for more growth in the Junior Sunday school ministry. May all the children, parents and even the teachers be blessed through its ministry.
